About the Authors
My name is Alyssa Culpepper and I am a senior at the University of Toledo, majoring in Environmental Science. The environmental issue that I am extremely interested in is the issue of trash pollution that is flooding the ocean. Every year, 28 billion pounds of plastic ends up in the ocean (OceanConservancy.org). I am interested in this issue because I grew up going to the beach and swimming in the ocean and I have a deep love and respect for the ocean and the incredible species that inhabit its waters. The ocean is beautiful and intricate and seeing trash pollute it is disgusting. Not only does it ruin the appearance of something naturally beautiful, but it kills and injures many species as well. This is an extremely important issue because sea animals of all shapes and sizes can ingest plastic material or get caught in it and die. This is an issue that is caused directly by humans and it needs to be addressed.

My name is Olivia Dorr and I am a second year student at UT majoring in Environmental Engineering and minoring in Sustainability. One environmental issue that particularly interests me is probably the biggest environmental issue: Climate change. It encompasses a huge issue that we, as humans, created. It is important to me because our actions have a direct effect on the rest of the earth, and we as a species are responsible for fixing it. It's something we need to be thinking about every single day; While we drive, eat and even brush our teeth. This issue is why I am majoring in Environmental Engineering, I want to be able to do all I can to help change our future for the better.
This issue is critical because humans have a huge impact on the earth, and it's our responsibility to right our wrongs. Our use of fossil fuels and the way we commercialized farming has increased both carbon and methane in the atmosphere, causing the global temperature to rise. With the rising temperatures, we are causing the ice caps to melt, which increases the water level of the ocean. An increase in carbon dioxide has also caused the ocean to become more acidic by creating carbonic acid when it is absorbed into the water. This causes coral and other species to die due to the increased acidity. Climate change also has the effect of making our natural disasters much worse by altering the pressure systems with the increased temperature. For all of these reasons, we must address our immense carbon footprint.
Hello, my name is Brittany Reid. I am a Junior at the University of Toledo, studying Environmental Science. My growing concern for climate change has dramatically increased over the years. Something has to be done if we want our future generations to have a life worth living. We, as a species, have caused great destruction to the world and we need to try and halt the destruction.
One important environmental issue, to me, is climate change. One way we could combat this issue is by reducing our greenhouse gas emissions. Oil is a huge contributor to this issue and that in itself is a problem. The ways we extract oil now are very detrimental to the health of the environment. Fracking and offshore drilling are extremely dangerous and can have long lasting effects on the environment and the people around the area. Climate change is important to me because it affects everyone and everything on the planet. The definition of climate change, according to Brian Dunbar at NASA, is referred to as "any long-term change in Earth's climate, or in the climate of a region or city. This includes warming, cooling and changes besides temperature". This is a huge issue because we are interrupting the natural fluctuation of the Earth by a dramatic increase in warming the average temperature. With that being said, the ocean levels are rising, coastal cities are facing flooding issues, the pH of the ocean is becoming more acidic, and the ocean currents are changing. People and animals that don't contribute are the ones being effected the most from the issue. By reducing greenhouse gas emissions, we can help those who can't help themselves.
Hello my name is Daniel Shadler. I am currently a senior at the University Of Toledo pursuing a bachelors in environmental sciences. An environmental issue that interests me is the harmful algal blooms of Lake Erie. This issue is important to me because I'm directly effected since I live next to the area and my water is drawn from Lake Erie. This is also important because it could be deadly to animals and younger or older people with less developed immune systems.
My classmates brought up points that we would need more control on agricultural runoff in order to prevent Algal Blooms in Lake Erie. They also supported my statement because if we run into another water crises then we will be unable to use water for things such as, bathing, drinking, and using to clean and prepare food.
The importance of solving the issue is due to the fact that many people rely on the water from Lake Erie and if algal bloom persists then many people can get extremely sick from using the water supplied from Lake Erie. My argument is that algal blooms from Lake Erie are a major issue that need to be prevented in order to ensure the health and safety of the people who rely on the water source in the area
